3 Great Kid-Friendly Activities for Families in Anderson, IN

1. Get Outdoorsy at Mounds State Park

Hop in the car and head out to Mounds State Park for a day of hiking, swimming, picnicking, and fishing in the White River. The Nature Center has animal displays, a wildlife viewing room, and interactive games. Naturalists host interpretive programs and nature hikes every weekend all year round. If you want to take the kids camping, the lovely campground has R.V. and tent campsites with electricity and a camp store.

The park’s main feature is ten unique earthworks built by the Adena-Hopewell people, prehistoric Indians who lived in the area. The Great Mound, the biggest earthwork, was constructed around 160 B.C. Archaeologists believe the mounds were gathering places for religious ceremonies.

Location and Hours

Mounds State Park is off I-69 east of Anderson at 4306 Mounds Road and is open for day use from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. In the summer, pool hours may change.

2. Discover the Magic of the Theatre

The 1,458 seat Paramount Theatre Centre and Ballroom is a beautiful historic theatre that opened on August 20, 1929, and still hosts astonishing stage performances, ballets, and concerts. The theatre’s phenomenal Grande Page Organ, installed in 1930, is one of only three pipe organs left in their original theatre installations in the country. The organ was used to accompany films and was still in operation as late as 1984.

Anderson’s Mainstage Theatre

Anderson’s Mainstage Theatre, home to the Madison County Dramatic Players, a volunteer performing arts group, was founded in 1960 and is one of the state’s oldest, self-supporting community theatres. Take your kids to discover the magic of live stage performances, including thrilling theatrical dramas, exciting musicals, and hysterically funny comedies.

The Madison County Dramatic Players bring six productions to the stage every year between March and November and perform dinner theatres and special events. The theatre is always looking for new talent in Anderson, so why not sign your family up for an audition and become the city’s next celebrated thespians.

3. Visit The Museum of Madison County History

Pop into The Museum of Madison County History to explore the culture and social history of the region’s first people and earliest pioneers who settled along the White River and creeks. A volunteer guide will greet you at the entrance and take you on a tour of the exhibits.

The museum’s main exhibits include WWII County Heroes and Home Front, a state-of-the-art display honoring the county’s war heroes, and a permanent exhibition called Native Americans of Madison County. Volunteering at the museum is another great family activity, and the museum is always looking for people to help with projects.
