Although the city of Anderson, IN, is mostly visited by those traveling further to Indianapolis, it is also an excellent base for those wanting to explore the beautiful state parks that central Indiana has to offer. If you are looking for great spots to go on a memorable adventure in your 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, these are some nearby nature reserves you should not miss. Prepare some snacks, invite your friends, and hit the road!
1. Mounds State Park
Located just four miles east of the Anderson city center, Mounds State Park is the closest destination where you can spend a day away from the urban routine. Covering an area of about 25 acres, this state park welcomes almost 400,000 visitors each year and features ten Native American ceremonial mounds built by the prehistoric Adena people. This place was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and is currently managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Although the Native American mounds are the main attraction at Mounds State Park, this nature reserve is also a great place for numerous sports and recreational activities. Crisscrossed by several trails, the state park is a great destination for hiking and mountain biking, while kayaking and canoeing are allowed in designated sections of the White River.
2. Summit Lake State Park
A top-rated destination for fishing and boating, Summit Lake State Park is another great recreational spot that can be reached in less than 40 minutes by car from downtown Anderson. Covering an area of about 2,700 acres, this state park was established in the late 1980s and welcomes over 235,000 visitors each year from all over central and eastern Indiana.
As the name indicates, the main attraction of Summit Lake State Park is the 800-acre body of water located in the middle of the reserve. Popular activities include boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking, and swimming. Fully equipped camping facilities with running water and electric hook-ups are also available, as well as a shelter house and public boat launches.
3. Fort Harrison State Park
Located about 25 miles southwest of the Anderson city center, Fort Harrison State Park is a beautiful nature reserve constructed on grounds that formally belonged to Fort Benjamin Harrison. Covering an area of about 1,700 acres, this state park opened its doors to the public in 1996 and has since then been a popular weekend destination among groups of friends and families from the region.
