Harrah's Hoosier Park Racing & Casino Harrah's casinos are known for their extravagant events, and their location in Anderson is no exception. Some of these include “Tertwine,” which showcases pieces made from fiber and textiles, “Welcome Home,” which is dedicated to American war veterans, and exhibits featuring all-female abstract artists. For a more interactive experience, you can attend any of the classes offered by the Anderson Museum. These classes go beyond simply painting a pre-made canvas or sculpture. Crisscrossed by several trails, the state park is a great destination for hiking and mountain biking, while kayaking and canoeing are allowed in designated sections of the White River. 2. Summit Lake State Park A top-rated destination for fishing and boating, Summit Lake State Park is another great recreational spot that can be reached in less than 40 minutes by car from downtown Anderson. Covering an area of about 2,700 acres, this state park was established in the late 1980s and welcomes over 235,000 visitors each year from all over central and eastern Indiana. As the name indicates, the main attraction of Summit Lake State Park is the 800-acre body of water located in the middle of the reserve. Popular activities include boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking, and swimming. Fully equipped camping facilities with running water and electric hook-ups are also available, as well as a shelter house and public boat launches. 3. Fort Harrison State Park Located about 25 miles southwest of the Anderson city center, Fort Harrison State Park is a beautiful nature reserve constructed on grounds that formally belonged to Fort Benjamin Harrison. Covering an area of about 1,700 acres, this state park opened its doors to the public in 1996 and has since then been a popular weekend destination among groups of friends and families from the region. They also mark the twenty most common trees in Indiana, if you find yourself interested in the local fauna and wildlife. This can be pretty interesting with a group of friends and each trail will bring you to a different area, so you may find yourself ending by the White River or even by the camp store. The White River This river stretches pretty far, and while you can access it through Mounds State Park, you can also just follow it downstream if you want some time alone. You'll want to make sure you bring plenty of bug spray depending on the season, but as long as you're prepared, this can be a great way to kill a couple of hours.
